How to Remove Acrylic Nails at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide
Materials You'll Need:
- Acetone (100% pure)
- Cotton balls or acetone wipes
- Nail file (180-grit or higher)
- Orangewood stick or cuticle pusher
- Buffer or nail drill (optional)
- Moisturizing lotion
Step 1: File Down the Acrylic
Use the nail file to gently file down the top layer of the acrylic overlay. This will make it easier for the acetone to penetrate and dissolve the acrylic. File in one direction only to avoid snagging or tearing the natural nails.
Step 2: Soak in Acetone
Cut the cotton balls into small pieces and soak them in pure acetone. Place a cotton ball on each acrylic nail and wrap it tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Secure the wraps with tape or clips.
Step 3: Let It Soak for 20-30 Minutes
Allow the acetone to soak into the acrylic for 20-30 minutes. The time may vary depending on the thickness of the acrylic.
Step 4: Use an Orangewood Stick to Remove
Once the acrylic has softened, use an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher to gently lift and remove the acrylic from the natural nails. Be careful not to apply too much pressure and damage your natural nails.
Step 5: Buff or Drill Away Remaining Residue
If there are any remaining acrylic residue or glue, use a buffer or nail drill with a fine grit attachment to gently buff or drill it away. Avoid over-buffing as it can weaken your natural nails.
Step 6: Moisturize
After removing the acrylic nails, it's important to moisturize your natural nails and cuticles to prevent dryness and damage. Apply a rich moisturizing lotion to your hands and nails.
Tips:
- Use 100% pure acetone for best results.
- Keep the acetone away from your eyes and skin.
- Do not remove acrylic nails without the proper tools.
- Be patient and gentle throughout the process.
